Where to begin…
The same issues continue to prevail. The little things, like sloppy defensive positioning. The little things, like bad turnovers. The little things like lack of awareness by multiple players. The little things add up. And I think that’s the biggest cause for concern. Philadelphia social media is calling for management to make a trade. Find a defenseman. While, yes, this team certainly needs to find a top line partner for Provorov, I’m afraid it’s not as simple as adding one player. With the right guy, sure, very possible. However, the Flyers wouldn’t be able to trade for that type of player without giving up something valuable. But when it comes to the persisting issues, it’s not a simple fix. Some games, the top four defensemen can be performing perfectly fine, but the Flyers will still fail to get it done.
How does the momentum change?
It’s hard to say what exactly the core issue is. Perhaps it’s confidence. A bad stretch leading to a downward shift in mentality, snowballing until we arrive here. Perhaps. One side argues that coaching is to blame. Another blames management. And yet another will blame the players themselves. In reality, it’s likely a combination. These three groups are heavily influenced by the others. Ultimately it will take the entire organization to shift the momentum. It can’t be left to one player, or one line. It can’t be left to just A.V. or just Chuck Fletcher.
Looking ahead
The Flyers will be looking to bounce back from this when they face the New York Rangers on Thursday, March 25th. Chuck Fletcher will be addressing the media today, Wednesday, March 24th at 1 pm EST. It will be quite interesting to hear his remarks.
